About the artist of the Painted Sun.
My name is Sunny and I hear from people I meet that my name matches my personality.
I have been doing some sort of artwork since I have been able to hold a pencil. I started out in Kindergarten. At the age of 7 I won my first award for an image I drew from a book. The contest was called Reading Jogs the Mind. I won a pencil, book , money and got my picture in the local newspaper At that point my parents always encouraged me to keep working at it. After my first contest I progressed to win more in the coming years. Before my high school graduation I had designed our high school gym floor layout with new logo. Was hired to design local business logos, event flyers, key chains, danceline t-shirts, logos and performance outfits, figure skating dresses and more. I even attended college during my senior year of high school taking jewelry design and drawing classes.
After High School I went on to earn a Graphic Design Degree. I then felt pressure. Pressure to be this big artist. It was as if everyone was holding their breath. I had done all these great things in high school and was voted most talented. How could I let everyone down. In the few years after that it just was not in me to sit at a desk in front of a computer designing logos and having people tell me what they wanted. Jobs were impossible to find. I was not even sure if Graphic Design was what I wanted to do. So I ditched art and I ended up a preschool teacher for 5 years. At one child care center they asked if I would like to take on title of Art Director. Thinking that would be fun, I decided to try it. The job consisted of planning art activities for kids ages 3 to 10 years of age. Imagine that. At first it felt great but after a long break art came calling. I really needed to do something with this talent that I was so graciously given.
Quitting my job was a hard move. I got into a little debt and worked my buns off to find my niche. I began to make beaded jewelry and it was a hit with all my friends. Then the beaded jewelry boom was happening and I did some arts and crafts shows. Beaded jewelry was everywhere! Ugh! That was not going to be easy. So then I thought, why not take my long time love and interest in Native American influenced arts and do something with that. I then started working with leather and purchased an industrial sewing machine. I was working my artworks on Buckskin and Cowhide leathers. I designed purses, wall hangings, Native American influenced shields, masks, feather art, etc. I was accepted into some major art shows and found it was a major amount of work to set up booths and product in hot weather for only weekends at a time. Traveling, hotels and time away was not much fun. Then I had my second child. This gave me time to think. Hard to travel with a baby, so I stopped once again and said "What now?"
Feeling frustrated from traveling the art show scene and getting into this debt, I almost threw in the towel. I was totally ready to give up and get a regular job again to pay off the bills. I just decided one day to pick up Polymer Clay and try to make something just for pure fun. No goals in mind, just fun. I went crazy with it and found it wonderfully imaginative. I loved it! Was this what I was supposed to do? It just might be! I enjoy the magic of it all so much. I just hope each creation is more wonderful than the next and that each day I learn more. I hope I can bring joy and touch others with my sculptures. Cheers to it all and the love of magical and mystical things.
I will keep on sculpting with love and plenty of devotion, for each little fairy and creature I create takes on a life all its own.
A huge thank you goes out to my longtime support and love, Joel, who took time off work, traveled the art scene with me, paid some bills, helped set-up, take down and most of all never complained. Many hugs to family members for always telling me I could do it. Kisses to my two kids who just love me and all my silly singing! Sorry kids but there will always be a crazy song. A song that does not make sense.
A song for the little things while we're driving.
Ooh, we're drivin down the street.
Don't feel like usin our feet.
They might fall off.
Then we'd cough.
Now that wouldn't be very neat.
You get the idea!
Hope I made you laugh!
